Fall (September-November)

​

  • Narrow your list of colleges to anywhere between 5-10

​

  • Ask your counselor if these colleges fit your career plans, and ask for resources/forms detailing them
     

  • Create a calendar for any of the following college activities:

          - Tests required to be taken, and fees/due dates of them

          - College application due dates

          - Required financial aid form deadlines

          - Any required recommendations/transcripts

          - Cousino's application processing deadlines

​

  • If you cannot afford applications/test fees, ask your counselor for a fee waiver

​​

  • Retake the SAT again for a potentially higher score

          - Make sure your SAT scores are sent to the narrowed-down colleges you want

​

  • Get your FAFSA application done as early as possible! October 1st, 2021 is the earliest you can file the FAFSA

          - Getting your FSA ID can be done on the website here

          - Filling out the FAFSA can be done here

​

  • Complete the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE application online to determine eligibility for aid money

          - Website to fill the application can be found here

​

  • Early decision/action/rolling admission applications should be prepared for early

          - They are usually sent between November 1st-15th, 2021

​

  • Ask teachers & counselor for recommendations of your academic record and extracurricular activities

          - Make sure these recommendations are stamped and addressed correctly with college forms

​

  • If essays are required, start writing early drafts and ask family/teachers for help

          - IMPORTANT: If you are applying for early decision college, finish your essays ASAP, as they are due much earlier!

​

  • Send your transcripts via Parchment if counselor are not available/recommend otherwise

Winter (December–February)

​​

  • Photocopy your essays and applications! These should be kept in a safe area to prevent loss of important information

          - If the college wants to see second-semester grades, make sure to copy them too

​

  • Make sure all appropriate grade forms are sent to your counselor for any colleges you select

​

  • Have your high school send grade transcripts to colleges-of-your-choice

          - This is sent by mail separately if done online

​

Spring (March–May)

 

  • Once you receive responses from your colleges, make your final decision

 

  • Verify your financial aid before you make any college budget decisions

 

  • Send your final transcripts to your college and meet housing deadlines

 

  • Complete your AP tests before Summer

Senior Timeline

 

 

Fall (September-November)

​

  • List your personal qualities, preferences, and abilities in general

​

  • Narrow down your college listing (based on said preferences) to about 10-20

​

  • Investigate these colleges in detail to see events/offers to students using them

​

  • Try estimating your financial aid costs/needs for each college

​

  • Start your junior year off by registering for and taking the PSAT/NMSQT test.

 

  • Meet with your counselor to organize your testing strategies and college plan.

 

  • Research college costs and tuition at different types of schools.

 

  • Get involved in extracurricular activities

 

  • Look over the schedule for testing for the SAT and the ACT. 

 

Winter (December-February)

 

  • Junior year grades will say a lot about your academic performance. Study a lot harder.

 

  • Make test prep plans for the ACT/SAT

          - Spring is usually the best time to schedule these tests

​

  • Search for financial aid sources both locally and federally

​

  • Ask your counselor about the SAT Subject Tests in the spring, when test material is most relevant

​

​

Spring (March-May)

 

  • Take the SAT/ACT

 

  • Gather any and all documents relevant to financial aid, including tax returns above all else

          - These will be used to fill out your FAFSA application next year, starting October 1st

​

  • Don't be too limited on colleges, as only a portion of all students of selective colleges are picked

 

  • Get letters of recommendation from teachers for use in college admission

 

  • Look at college admission requirements

 

  • Contact colleges to schedule campus visits

 

  • Attend college national fairs

 

Summer (June-August)

 

  • Begin working on your college application essay

 

  • If you are planning on an athlete career in college, register with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)

​

  • Get your FSA ID

          - Getting your FSA ID can be done on the website here

​

  • Develop a financial aid plan

​

  • Find a full-time/part-time job or participate in a summer camp/program

​

  • Create a resume of your academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities, and work

​

  • Look for colllege admission papers, both electronically and physically

​

  • Visit any possible local colleges ahead of time
